Planting Guide for Thunder Ridge Properties

The new landscaping and planting guidelines have been formulated to follow the existing CC&Rs and use the book "Arizona Gardener's Guide" by Mary Irish as the central plant guide. Follow the Planting Guide link in the navigation on the left to read the Thunder Ridge guide in full.

  1. Any plant featured in the Arizona Gardener’s Guide by Mary Irish may be planted within the building envelope without prior approval from the DRC, with the exception of
    • Palms for Arizona starting on page 86
    • Any vegetation whose mature height exceeds 30 feet.
  2. Vegetation excepted from Ms Irish’s book may be submitted to the DRC for approval. A landscape plan that includes existing plant materials and hard scape is to be submitted.
  3. Any disruption of the setback areas must be submitted to the DRC for approval. This includes, but is not limited to
    • Removal of plant materials
    • Addition of plant materials
    • Addition of inert materials, such as rocks, granite
    • Addition of foreign objects such as furniture, fences, gates.

    To summarize

  • With the exception of palms and vegetation that will reach greater than 30 feet, any vegetation presented in Arizona Gardener’s Guide by Mary Irish may be planted in the building envelope without gaining approval from the DRC
  • The setback areas are not to be disrupted or altered in any way
  • Any exception must be submitted to the DRC for approval

Mary Irish is the former director of public horticulture at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona. A Texas native residing in Arizona, Mary received her master's degree in geography from Texas A&M University. She is a regular contributor to several magazines, including "Sunset, " and teaches classes on the care and culture of agaves, cacti, and other desert shrubs and perennials as well as introductory classes for beginning gardeners. She once hosted a weekly Phoenix-based radio show called "The Arizona Gardener, " and has also helped produce several television programs about gardening.
